The first five senators have been elected to the next Seanad.

Two Fine Gael candidates, two from Fianna Fáil and one from Sinn Féin have been elected by the Cultural and Educational panel.

Former government chief whip Sean Kyne was the first person deemed elected this morning.

Mr Kyne made the quota on the 14th count of the Cultural and Educational panel.

The Fine Gael politician previously served as a TD for Galway West, but narrowly lost his seat in last month's general election.

Fianna Fáil's Lisa Chambers also won a seat this morning, after she failed to win re-election to the Dáil last month.

A third former TD, Fianna Fáil's Malcolm Byrne, was also elected after contesting his fifth election in 300 days.

It's the third he has won, having been elected a councillor, TD and Senator in separate elections since last May

The final two senators elected to the panel were Sinn Féin's Fintan Warfield and Fine Gael's John McGahon.

Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh missed out on a seat, having fallen short in the final count.

Meanwhile, counting is also underway for the Trinity College and NUI panels today, while the Agricultural Panel count set to begin this afternoon.

It's expected counting will take until Thursday or Friday to complete.

The final 11 members of the next Seanad will be nominated by the Taoiseach of the next government.
