Seán O'Fearghail of Fianna Fáil is the Ceann Comhairle of the 32nd Dáil.
It comes after TDs cast secret ballots in a first-time vote to determine who will chair the chamber.
Mr O'Fearghail and Independent Dublin Central TD Maureen O'Sullivan were seen as the favourites to win.
Fine Gael's Andrew Doyle, Bernard Durkan and Sinn Féin's Caoimhghín O'Caoláin were also in the running.
Each candidate gave a speech earlier, as the 32nd Dáil met for the first time.
