Fines for people who leave their county for non-essential reasons are being considered by the Government.

It comes despite a spokesperson denying it was being considered at all just this morning.

A high-level group of officials met this morning and the issue is under consideration, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin.

Speaking in the Dáil, Mr Martin said: "The oversight committee met this morning, chaired by the Secretary General of my department, with a view to stronger enforcement around level three restrictions.

"We're looking at the whole areas of fines, for example, in terms of traffic and so on."

Mr Martin also noted there are particular concerns among officials about Northern Ireland, where coronavirus rates are surging.

Mr Martin said they're concerned about potential 'over-spill' of courses from the North into the Republic.

The Taoiseach was speaking on the day that level three coronavirus restrictions came into effect for the entire country.

The measures - which will remain in place for three weeks - encouraged people to not leave their county for anything other than essential reasons such as work or education.
