A fire broke out at a vacant property in Crooksling near Brittas, south Dublin, that was rumoured to be used for asylum seekers.

Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene of the fire at a former nursing home in Crooksling off the Blessington Road at 7am this morning.

Six fire engines including a turntable ladder and emergency tender remain at the scene.

Emergency services say there are traffic restrictions on the N81, due to the position of hose lines being used to tackle the fire.

Crooksling was recently the scene of public protests, after rumours spread that a former nursing home in the area was due to be used for accommodating asylum seekers.

Gardaí have expressed concern over an increase in arson attacks after three properties in Dublin, Longford and Tipperary were set on fire in January.

A Department of Integration spokesperson said the Department is working to "offer shelter to those who are fleeing war and persecution, and condemns any violence or intimidation towards International Protection applicants".

"The incident in south Dublin is currently under investigation by An Garda Síochána," it said.

As yet, there's no indication of the cause of the blaze, but Wicklow TD Jennifer Whitmore said the timing and location raises concerns of possible foul play.

"The fact there's been protests at the sites and now a fire broke out - that's a story we've seen all across the country," she said.

"We've seen fire after fire at these sites earmarked for integration.

"This is criminal behaviour if this turns out to be arson."

The Department of Integration has been contacted for comment.
