Welly Throwing Championships Araglin Carnival, Co. Cork

19 July 2013

History has it that the sport originated from a spat between two farmers in a local pub one night. An unfortunate incident saw the spilling of ale into the wellington boot of an innocent and unwitting bystander.

Notwithstanding the virtual criminal act of spilling ale in the first place – something that would almost certainly have caused a chorus of boos, hisses and well deserved verbal abuse directed at the clumsy oaf. The farmer whose trousers were now sodded and whose foot was drowned up to the ankle was not best pleased by all accounts. In a fit of rage he removed his boot and preceeded to chase the drink spilling fool out of the pub swinging hard and fast with his improvised rubber weapon!

It's an added event to the Araglen Carnival and a great sport for all involved.

Spudfest or The Potato Festival, Gorey, Co. Wexford

20 July 2013

This annual event celebrates the humble spud. The festivities take place on the 3rd Saturday of July every year, which is the peak time to taste the new potatoes known locally as 'floury balls'. It has attracted visitors from all over the world, local area and neighbouring counties. This year the theme is 'bring a friend or a visiting relation' to honour the year of the gathering.

The event starts at 8.30 pm, traditionally with the potato quiz, featuring a host of weird and wonderful questions about potatoes. The winner is crowned Potato Head and holds the title for one year. The certificate presented to the winner is displayed on the wall of the Bunker Bar and will take pride of place alongside the previous 5 winners.

There is music on the night by DJ Spud.i.am and there will be Rock n' Roll bingo along with lucky envelope and many prizes to be won on the night.

Most importantly of course, there is a free feed of spuds to all who attend.

The evening finishes up with dancing, with tunes from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s right up 'till 12.30am.
