Leaving Cert exams are set to return to the traditional format in 2022.

The Education Minister says she's optimistic about next year's State exams, but says they'll continue to review the situation.

Last year's Leaving Cert was replaced with a calculated grades system due to the impact of the pandemic and school closures.

This year's, meanwhile, saw a mix of traditional written exams and calculated grades.

Minister Norma Foley says she understands the students sitting the 2022 exams have also missed a lot of in-class learning.

She said: "I think the most important thing for our students is to know they will be well supported and well-resourced.

"It is our absolute aspiration that they will have full class time going forward... I have every confidence that can be achieved.

"I am confident we're moving forward with the class of 2022 for them to take their exams as we would do traditionally - with the caveat that we keep everything under review."

She was speaking after 61,000 students got their Leaving Cert results this morning - a mix of predicted grades and formal exam results.

Students who chose to sit exams and receive accredited grades were given the higher mark from the two options in each subject.

Results have climbed to another record high, with a big increase in top grades for higher-level subjects - which will likely see a further jump in CAO points requirements for college courses.

First-round CAO offers will be released next Tuesday.

The later-than-usual release of Leaving Cert results means there's also expected to be a "very short" window for students to lodge an appeal.
