This is Ford’s all-new Galaxy which is due on our shores this summer. If you’ve ever sat in a Galaxy before, or any similar sized MPV, you’ll know that space is what it’s all about.
With the all-new Galaxy we’re told that seven full-sized seats will be on offer – so, does that mean no more squeezing adults into seats 6 and 7? Only a full test drive will prove this, but for the moment we’re going on the information we’ve been given.
We’re told that comfort has been enhanced in the interior with massaging multi-contour seats available to the front. If you want to maximise space in this vehicle there is a control panel to the rear which, at the push of a button, enables all five of the second and third row seats to fold flat. Ford says that passengers in the second and third row will also benefit from 10mm more headroom. Third row passengers also get armrest storage bins and cup-holders.
In terms of ride, the all-new Galaxy uses Ford’s integral link rear suspension. Ford says that this “retains lateral stiffness for enhanced steering and handling”. This system allows the wheels to move further rearwards on impact with bumps. The Galaxy will also offer self-levelling rear suspension that “maintains optimal ride height for comfort and handling.”
The all-new Galaxy will be available with Ford’s 210hp 2.0litre TDCi Bi-turbo diesel engine. This offers 450Nm of torque and 2,000rpm.
Andrew Brumley, chief engineer, Ford Engine Programs, said, "The new high-powered TDCi diesel engine follows the downsizing trend we've led with our EcoBoost petrol technology. Smaller engines deliver better fuel efficiency and emissions, and we claim the power back with advanced technology. Sequential bi-turbo technology delivers the seamless performance consumers want every day in all conditions, and makes turbo-lag a distant memory."
The 2.0litre diesel engine is also available with outputs of 120PS, 150PS and 180PS. Petrol offerings include 160PS 1.5-litre EcoBoost and 240PS 2.0-litre EcoBoost. We’re yet to find out which engines will be available in Ireland.
The new Galaxy will also feature Ford’s newest speed limiting technology with the Intelligent Speed Limiter. This reads traffic signs and when the system is turned on it ensures that the car doesn’t break the speed limit.
The Galaxy was officially unveiled by illusionist Darcy Oake, on the back of a trailer! We've been told that this new MPV should be with Ford Ireland by the end of May or early June.
