A Former Christian Brother has been sentenced to 5 years in jail, after being found guilty of indecently assaulting 3 boys at the North Monastery School in Cork in the 1980s.

Judge Sean O'Donobhain said that Fr. Edward Bryan had not shown a shred of remorse. Last week a jury at Cork Circuit Criminal Court found him guilty on 7 counts of indecently assaulting the boys between 1984 and 1990.

He was sentenced today on a total of 8 counts, having been convicted on one further count of abusing a boy at a trial last year.

Passing sentence the Judge said the lack of remorse shown by Fr. Bryan was glaringly obvious to him and quite alarming.

Sentence to be back-dated

He cited the fact that he was an adult and the victims were children as being among the aggravating issues in the case. He also noted there were multiple victims and the prolonged nature of the abuse.

Fr. Bryan will now be placed on the sex offenders register and his sentence will be back-dated to February 21st which is the date he was first taken into custody.

Afterwards the victims said they were pleased with the sentence. In their impact statements they thanked the Gardai and the members of the jury for believing them.
