Former ECB chief Jean Claude Trichet says he will not be called as a witness at the Banking Inquiry.

Mr Trichet, who strongly opposed burning Anglo bondholders during his term says the ECB's rules mean he does not have to answer to national parliaments.

Ministers including the Tánaiste have previously called for him to give evidence about his role in the aftermath of the banking collapse.

But Jean Claude Trichet says that's not going to happen and that the bank guarantee was done "without consultation".Meanwhile, a cabinet minister says the European Central Bank may be independent, but it's not 'unaccountable'.

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton says he might be right about that - but it doesn't mean the inquiry shouldn't hear from him:
