Former Fine Gael TD John Connor has been named as the victim of a road crash in Roscommon yesterday evening.
Gardaí said the crash happened shortly before 2pm yesterday, January 27th, on a local road in Frenchpark.
Mr Connor was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
He was the sole occupant of the car and no one else was injured
Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan said he was sad to hear of the death of Mr Connor.
“Senator and councillor, from Frenchpark, Co Roscommon, John was a man of huge integrity, a great orator, political wisdom, good company and a great friend,” he said online.
Independent Roscommon TD Denis Naughten also said he was “saddened” to hear of Mr Connor’s death.
“I learned a lot from John over our years in Fine Gael,” he said. “He was someone who cared passionately for rural Ireland.”
Deputy John O'Connor
Mr Connor was first elected to the Dáil in 1981 as a representative of Roscommon/East Galway. He lost his seat a year later before becoming a senator.
He was reelected in 1989 and retained his Dáil seat in the newly created Longford-Roscommon constituency in the 1992 general election.
Mr O’Connor served until 1997 when he was unsuccessful in that year’s election but was again elected to the Seanad.
He was also a county councillor between 1999 and 2004.
Gardaí in Roscommon are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.
Any road users who may have camera footage - including dash-cam - and were travelling in Frenchpark are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
