Two former professional rugby players are embarking on an attempt to drive through all 32 countries of Ireland in 24 hours today, in a bid to raise money for charity.
Peter Bracken (Tullamore RFC, Connacht Rugby, Wasps, Ireland A) and Mikey Smyth (Terenure RFC, Connacht Rugby) will make the journey in a 100% electric car.
They’ll be starting their adventure from Connolly Motors in Ballina, Co Mayo at 2pm today, and will finish around midday tomorrow in Connolly Motors, Ballybrit, Co Galway.
They’ll be driving clockwise through all 32 counties, and will be live-streaming their journey on Facebook and Instagram.
They said their intention is to “catch up with old friends, have some craic, raise some money and prove that electric cars are a brilliant option in Ireland”.
The trip will continue overnight, with scheduled stops to charge the car in Monaghan, Dublin, Carlow and Limerick.
Peter and Mikey will be raising funds for Rare Diseases Ireland, a charity that offers support to people living with rare conditions and their families.
Vicky McGrath, CEO of Rare Diseases Ireland, said: “We are delighted that Peter and Mikey have chosen to support RDI with this extraordinary challenge – 32 counties in 24 hours in a 100% electric car – a rare challenge for the rare community.
“We are thankful to them for raising awareness for people across Ireland living with rare conditions. And of course the important role for e-vehicles in the battle against climate change.
“We wish them the very best of luck in their endeavours.”
Anyone who wants to support Peter, Mikey and RDI can donate via their iDonate page.
