Former Taoiseach Brian Cowen is seriously ill this afternoon.
He was rushed to hospital last night with a suspected bleed on the brain.
He remains at the Beacon in South Dublin, Midlands 103 reports.
The 59-year-old was treated for fluid on a lung in April, having become unwell at a golf event.
Speaking this afternoon, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he wishes Mr Cowen a speedy recovery.
He said: "I only heard in the last few hours, so I don't know any details.
"I served in the Dáil with Brian Cowen for a number of years, and I really hope if he is unwell - as I hear he is - that he makes a speedy recovery."
Mr Cowen served in various Cabinet positions under Albert Reynolds and Bertie Ahern, before becoming Taoiseach in 2008 following the resignation of Mr Ahern.
He remained in the role until 2011, and retired from politics the same year.
