French airstrikes are targeting Islamist rebel positions in Mali. 

Britain has agreed to help the military operation, offering RAF transport planes - the first one leaving the UK this afternoon. 

Malian government forces, backed by French fighter jets, are working to halt an advance by Al Qaeda linked extremists towards the capital of the West African state.

Troops from at least five other African countries are expected to join the fight.
