Bees in France produced blue and green coloured honey after getting their sugar source from an M&Ms waste processing plant.

The blue honey produced by French bees is really, really blue

Beekeepers near the town of Ribeauville in the northeastern region of Alsace discovered that the bees were picking up sugary waste from the plant and bringing it back 2.5 kilometres to their apiaries, where they convert the substance into honey.

Bees usually get their sugar from nectar, a sweet liquid found in flowers, but a spokesperson for the British Beekeepers' Association told the BBC that 2011's harsh winter could mean they've begun looking for an alternative sugar source.

Agrivalor, the company who runs the waste plant, said it would clean its containers and begin storing waste in airtight containers, which means the bees will now have to look for a new source for their honey.

President of France's apiculturists’ union Alain Frieh said that while the blue and green honey doesn't taste any different from regular honey, it won't be going on sale. "For me, it's not honey. It's not sellable."

We're not too miffed; ever hear of purple ketchup?
