Today

A cold and frosty start today, away from Atlantic coasts, with some icy stretches and a few mist patches.

Dry with spells of sunshine this morning, but cloud will steadily thicken from the west and rain and drizzle will become widespread during the afternoon and early evening.

The rain will turn persistent in the northwest.

Highest afternoon temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees but turning milder in the evening.

Turning windy with strengthening southerly winds and gales developing near Atlantic coasts.

Tonight

Tonight will continue windy. Some dry spells in the southeast but wet elsewhere with the risk of spot flooding in the northwest.

Southwesterly winds will continue strong and gusty with gales along coasts.

Lows of 5 to 9 degrees.

Weather warning

A status yellow warning fro rain will come into effect for Donegal, Galway, Mayo and Sligo later.

Heavy rain is forecast with accumulations of 40-50mm and localised flooding.

At the coast, high seas and strong to gale force southerly winds will combine to give a risk of coastal flooding.

The alert is in place from 3.00pm on Friday.
