A charity is launching a fundraising campaign to help complete a domestic abuse refuge in Galway.
COPE Galway is launching a 'Buy a Brick for Modh Eile' campaign at a public preview of the new home on Thursday.
It is the only 24-hour accessible refuge for the western region.
Modh Eile House on Forster Street is being renovated to accommodate a new, enhanced facility.
A Capital Assistance Scheme grant of €2.3m, and substantial donations from a number of benefactors, has helped make significant progress towards meeting the €4.3m cost.
But the charity is now turning to the people of Galway and the region to help raise the final €1m shortfall.
Sharon Fitzpatrick, COPE Galway's head of development, explains: There are, unfortunately, many in our local communities who experience the trauma of domestic abuse and seek our safety, protection and support.
"This project has been a long time coming - we will soon be able to offer a state of the art facility that will meet the needs of these women and children.
"To be part of this project, we are asking individuals, companies and organisations in Galway and beyond to make a donation.
"The funds raised will not only help us to build a new refuge and service for women and children experiencing domestic abuse but will also help us rebuild the lives of the women and children who use this service."
The bricks start at €25, although COPE says any donation is welcome through its online appeal, over the phone, by post or in person.
Donors will be given an optional name credit or can remain anonymous.
