Both were students at Presentation College in Headford, County Galway and parish priest Fr Ray Flaherty said the community will need to support the area’s young people

"They're numbed and they're in disbelief over what's happened," he said.

"We hear about these stories happening in other places, and then when it comes to your own community it becomes more real.

"The pain and the suffering that the families are going through; and particularly remembering the two young people that died - their families are feeling, it’s terrible at this time."

All staff and pupils at Presentation College in Headford will be offered specialist counselling.

An Garda Síochána has appealed for witnesses of the collision to contact them.
