The funeral of one of Ireland’s greatest playwrights has taken place today in Donegal.
Brian Friel has been laid to rest in Glenties Cemetery.
He died at his home on Friday morning at the age of 86.
Liam Neeson paid tribute to the writer describing him as “Ireland’s Chekhov” and a “master craftsman”.
Meryl Streep, who starred in the film adaptation of his best known play Dancing at Lughnasa, described him as a “tender dramatist, an insightful humanist and a lovely man”.
President Michael D Higgins said the playwright's "work is an extraordinary legacy and is of the highest standard, and it ranges so widely".
He is survived by his wife Anne, daughters Mary (Bateman), Judy (Maher), Sally (Sultan) and son David. He was predeceased by his daughter Patricia.
