Further Orange low temperature and ice warning issued for 15 counties

A new Status Orange low temperature and ice warning has been issued for 15 counties tonight.

The new Orange warning will take effect from 7pm tonight for counties Galway, Roscommon, Tipperary, Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim and Donegal.

It will revert back to the Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning at 8am tomorrow morning until midday.

Met Éireann has warned that the 13 counties included in this Orange warning will experience extreme cold with widespread severe frost and ice, along with lying snow in some areas.

Patches of freezing fog are also to be expected.

Dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot are likely, with travel disruption and delays, animal welfare issues and poor visibility also expected.

Around 500 people remain without power across the country this morning.

The ESB are asking anyone affected by outages in Limerick, North Cork and Tipperary to attend their local hotel for support.

“We've made arrangements with some local hotels in the Newcastle West, the Abbeyfeale and Charleville areas where customers can go and they can get a hot meal, they can charge their mobile phone,” ESB’s Siobhan Wynne said.

“We've reached out directly to those customers and contacted them.”

Temperatures dipped to -8.2C overnight in Cavan, while Limerick Junction in County Tipperary recorded the second lowest temperature so far of -8C.

A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning remains in place for the rest of the country.
