Mother and newborn survive Bangladesh building collapse

Cranes have begun clearing the wreckage of a ruined garment factory complex in Bangladesh this morning after the "last survivor" was killed by a fire.

The fire, which broke out last night, was believed to have started as a result of sparks from cutting machinery.

Rescuers had been trying to free a woman who had been trapped for 110 hours, but she was killed when the blaze broke out.

Three people were reported injured as a result of the flames in the wreckage. 

The confirmed number of dead currently stands at 381, but the toll is expected to rise now that heavy lifting equipment is being used rather than a manual search for survivors.

The tragedy has once again focused attention on the poor safety conditions in the 15 billion euro Bangladeshi garment industry, which supplies many big Western clothing brands.

Five people have been arrested as police in Dhaka continue their investigations into the cause of the collapse.

Two factory owners and an engineer have appeared in court, while the owner of the building who had gone on the run, was arrested yesterday on the border with India.

A second engineer is also being questioned by police.

There has been one glimmer of hope in the tragedy after a Mother trapped in the rubble gave birth to a child.
