The teacher accused of being the ‘GAA catfish’ has secured an interim injunction against disciplinary action from her school.
The case dates from a podcast released by the 2 Johnnies in 2022 which claimed a number of GAA players had been tricked into relationships with a woman who created a fake profile - a phenomenon known as ‘catfishing’.
The podcast went viral and people began to speculate about the identity fo the ‘GAA catfish’.
“After the podcast was released in May 2022, even though the 2 Johnnies have been very careful to keep the identity of the catfish a secret, within hours, an online gossip forum had published the name of this teacher Niamh Farrell, who is a music teacher at a secondary school in Rathfarnham in Dublin,” journalist Ellen Coyne told Newstalk Breakfast.
“We have to stress that Ms Farrell says that that is absolutely not true; she says she has not engaged in catfishing that these allegations are false.
“At the time, her school was alerted to the fact that her name had been posted online, parents started getting in touch.”
After a third episode came out later earlier this year, the school claimed that Ms Farrell admitted she was the person at the centre of the podcast and started disciplinary proceedings.
Ms Farrell denies this, started legal proceedings and has secured an injunction against the disciplinary process from the High Court.
