A weather warning is in place today as hurricane-like weather is due to hit the country this afternoon.

Heavy rain and strong gales are forecast and it’s expected the south of the country will be the worst affected.

Forecasters are warning that conditions may be as bad as those experienced during the infamous “Hurricane Charley” of 1986.

It is expected to be relatively clear this morning but Met Eireann says we can expect bad weather to arrive in the afternoon.

It says a combination of high winds, heavy rainfall, abnormally low pressure and high tides will cause dangerous conditions in south Munster and east Leinster.
/> Gale to strong gale force easterly winds will later veer southeasterly to southerly with frequent spells of rain.

This will result in accumulations of 30 to 50 millimetres with higher totals possible in mountainous areas.

The will also be a high risk of coastal and river flooding.

Forecaster Gerry Murphy has more details of what we can expect.

He spoke with Breakfast here on Newstalk.
