A number of tourists have been arrested in Malaysia, after they stripped down and posed naked on Mount Kinabalu. The UNESCO world-heritage site located on the island of Borneo is considered sacred by the local population, and after a magnitufe-5.9 earthquake struck nearby – killing 18 people – outrage that the western visitors had desecrated the site, incurring the wrath of the mountain spirit.
The arrested tourists lawyer has said that their actions have whipped up such a furore that he has requested they be isolated from other prisoners in an effort to protect their safety.
While travel certainly broadens the mind, minding your manners when abroad can be harder than it seems. While posing naked on spiritual hotspot is probably not best advised, even harmless gestures or everyday actions can quickly escalate into rubbing someone else up the wrong way.
