On The Right Hook this evening, guest host Shane Coleman will be talking to Laura Haugh, whose popular parenting blog MummyPages is currently running a campaign to get schools to “Can the Crest’ on school uniforms - which they say will save a family an average of €300 per child per year. 

Already, more than 4,000 people have pledged their support to the petition, which will be presented to the Education Minister Jan O’Sullivan, in the hope that it will prompt her to regulate how school uniforms are designed.

Joining Shane and Laura will be Paul Rowe of Educate Together, the patron body of multi denominational and co-educational schools across the country, who’ll offer the view of some of the country’s schools.

For many of us, the school uniform was a rite of passage; a bulky oversized jumper we were told we’d grow into, or a pinafore handed down from older sisters. 

Many critics of the uniform claim that it denies children the right to express their individuality, but as the gallery below attests, when it comes to pulling on garments every morning, they come in all different sorts of shapes and sizes around the world:
