'Game of Thrones' has received a record-breaking 32 Emmy Award nominations.

The Northern Ireland fantasy series is up for Outstanding Drama Series, as well as awards for sound, visual effects, costume, make-up and casting.

Kit Harington has been nominated for Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Jon Snow, while Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, is up for Best Leading Actress.

While the eighth and final season received mixed reviews earlier this year, it picked up the most nominations for any programme in a single season.

The show has beaten a 25-year standing record for Emmy nominations, set by 'NYPD Blue'.

Irish actor Chris O'Dowd also gets a nomination for his role in 'State of the Union'.

On the news, he said: "Congratulations to all the 2019 Emmy nominees. Especially me, I'm particularly pleased for me."

'Game of Thrones' was followed by 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' (20), 'Chernobyl' (19), 'Saturday Night Live' (18), 'Barry' (17), 'Fosse/Verdon' (17) and 'When They See Us' (16) in topping nominations.

Among the seven Outstanding Comedy Series nominees, there are four first-timers - including 'Fleabag', which stars Irish actors Andrew Scott and Fiona Shaw.

Others include 'The Good Place' and 'Schitt's Creek', along with 'Russian Doll' - which joins returning hits 'Barry', 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' and 'Veep'.

Michael Douglas and Eugene Levy are also new to the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category.

Nominees for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series include first-time Emmy nominees Natasha Lyonne, Catherine O'Hara and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Television Academy chairman and CEO, Frank Scherma, said: "It's great to see such an array of new talent honoured for their excellent work.

"While our voting membership recognized several returning, acclaimed programs, there are many Emmy categories that feature fresh shows and emerging talents, celebrating the opportunity and continued creative growth offered by television".

The 71st Emmy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 22nd.
