Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a road accident in Co Offaly yesterday.

A woman in her 70s is in a critical condition at Dublin's Beaumont hospital after being knocked down by a truck in Birr.

She was hit by a rigid lorry as she crossed the main Birr to Tullamore Road close to Loughnane's Topaz Garage shortly after 5pm.

The injured woman was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore and later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

Gardaí at Birr are appealing for witnesses.
