Gardaí are appealing to all road users - including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians - to stop breaking red lights.

The call is being made as part of a new safety campaign targeting vulnerable road users, in particular in the Dublin region.

141 people have died on Irish roads since the start of the year - including 27 pedestrians, 17 motorcyclists and and nine cyclists.

Gardaí are to mount high visibility and enforcement campaigns at peak times, as part of the 'Safer Roads for Dublin' initiative.

Between January and September, 35,932 motorists have been detected speeding in the Dublin region.

The gardaí have identified the top 10 locations for speeding in Dublin, and these location will receive targeted enforcement.

The campaign will be implemented on a 24/7 basis and is receiving support from the RSA, local authorities and transport stakeholders - such as Dublin Bus, LUAS, and the Irish Road Haulage Association.

Chief Superintendent Aidan Reid from the Garda Traffic Bureau says hundreds of drivers have been caught breaking red lights this year.

The top speeding locations in the Dublin region are:

  • Fingal County Council - Celbridge Road and Cappagh Road Finglas
  • South Dublin County Council - Naas Road, Ballycullen Road and Dodder Park Road
  • Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council - Drummartin Link Road and Temple Hill Blackrock
  • Dublin City Council - Dublin Port Tunnel, Swords Road, Whitehall and Wolfe Tone Quay
