It happened at around 1 o'clock this morning on a secondary road off the main Sligo to Ballina route when a 4-by-4 went off-road and struck an embankment.

The driver - who was the only person in the car - was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has been removed to the morgue at Sligo General Hospital.

The road at Corballa remains closed this lunchtime as gardaí carryout a technical examination of the scene.
