A serving Garda has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault.
It is understood the Garda was detained in the Midlands region early this morning and is now being questioned at Loughrea Garda station.
He is being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He can be detained for up to 24 hours.
It is the first arrest ever made by the Garda Ombudsman Commission since it was established in 2007.
Background to the Commission
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission was set up in 2005 and opened its public offices 2 years later.
The independent statutory body directly and independently investigates complaints against members of the Garda Síochána.
It also handles public complaints against the force.
Three people make up the Commission along with a management team of 4 others.
