The suspect vehicle was later found abandoned at Mahon Golf Club and gardaí launched an "extensive search" of the area.

A number of stolen items were recovered, while a vehicle was seized for a technical examination.

At around 6:40pm, the Garda dog 'Laser' located a man in his 20s.

The man was arrested by gardaí and is being held under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act at Togher Garda Station.

Meanwhile, gardaí say they're continuing searches and are now appealing for witnesses.

In a statement, the force said: "Gardaí are also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed two men, believed to be aged in their 20s/30s, in the area and who may appear to have muddy or dirty clothes to contact us immediately.

"Gardaí can be contacted at Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021-452 2000, The Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111 or any Garda Station."
