Family and colleagues of Garda Jerry McCabe have gathered in Limerick to mark the 20th anniversary of his death.
The 52-year-old detective was shot dead by the IRA during a botched post office raid in Adare on June 7th, 1996.
His widow, Ann, laid flowers in honour of her late husband at a wreath-laying ceremony in the village this morning.
His daughter, Stacey, told the gathering: "In the midst of sadness, we pray for thanksgiving for the inspiration and example we received in and through dad."
Mr McCabe, a father of five, was killed four months after the breakdown of the first IRA ceasefire.
The IRA Army Council initially denied responsibility for the murder, but later claimed the men involved had acted "in contravention of its orders".
Four members of the organisation convicted of his manslaughter - Pearse McAuley, Jeremiah Sheehy, Michael O'Neill and Kevin Walsh - were all subsequently released.
Mr McCabe's colleague, Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan, was shot 11 times on the same day and survived.
