A Garda has suffered a number of injuries after he tried to give medical attention to a man in County Cavan.

The incident happened in the Cootehill area at around midday yesterday and afterwards the Garda was treated at the scene.

He was well enough to remain on duty.

A man aged in his 50s was detained under the Mental Health Act and later released without charge.

A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
