A garda has been stabbed in the hand during a stand-off with a man at Cork Marts near Fermoy last night.

The incident happened at around 8pm after a man tried to block cars leaving the mart with his truck.

An officer from Fermoy station was stabbed in the hand as he tried to take the keys from the ignition, before the driver was overpowered by the Garda's colleagues.

The officer suffered a serious injury to his hand and is being treated at Cork University Hospital.

The man was brought to Fermoy Garda Station.
