The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that a Garda stand trial on charges of false imprisonment, theft and perverting the course of justice.
Sergeant Ciaran Whelan, with an address in Nenagh, County Tipperary, appeared in court today on charges arising from an investigation into alleged corruption.
Sergeant Whelan is the second Garda to be charged as part of an investigation into a particular Dublin based unit.
He is accused of falsely imprisoning a woman at an address in Dublin 8 in 2021.
He is also facing two charges of theft; the first relates to a flat in Rathmines in June 2021, while the second relates to a flat on Mountjoy Square North three months later.
Aside from that, the 51-year-old is also accused of perverting the course of justice by creating and printing a search warrant; by making a false report to a Superintendent in relation to a search at the flat in Rathmines; by creating an incident on the Garda Pulse System and by amending data on the same system.
He was remanded on bail today and is due back in court in May.
