Gardai are appealing for witnesses to a fatal accident in Co. Mayo earlier today.

The collision, involving a car and a truck, happened at around ten past nine this morning on the main N5 Westport to Castlebar road at Sheenaune.

The 24-year old female passenger of the car was pronounced dead at the scene and the 33-year old male car driver was taken to Mayo General Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The road was closed for a time earlier today to allow for a forensic examination of the scene but has since re-opened this evening.
