Gardaí are being defended from criticism that they failed to move in on the paramilitary-style funeral of Alan Ryan at the weekend.

The 32-year-old Real IRA member was shot dead at Grange Lodge Avenue in Clongriffin in Dublin last week.

The Justice Minister Alan Shatter has described the scenes at the funeral on Saturday as ‘reprehensible’ after shots were fired as the coffin left the family home in north Dublin.

It is said to have happened as his coffin was leaving a house on Grange Abbey Drive in Donaghmede on Saturday morning.

Gardaí investigating his murder arrested a man in connection with the investigation last Friday.

Earlier last week Gardaí mounted a series of armed checkpoints across the north side of Dublin city following the shooting.

Crime journalist Paul Williams says Gardai will find it difficult to identify those who fired the shots at the funeral service.

He told Breakfast here on Newstalk the Real IRA used the funeral as a propaganda stunt.
