A man is in serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed in Mountjoy Prison.

The man had been put under a protected regime because of threats from other inmates and was in the exercise yard when he was stabbed on Monday evening.

He is now in hospital where his injuries have been described as serious.

The Irish Prison Service said it does not comment on individual cases.

A Garda investigation is ongoing.
