Gardaí have seized €3.25 million worth of cryptocurrency after hundreds of bank accounts in 15 different countries were flagged for suspicious activity.
Following complaints from a number of international organisations, a Garda investigation was set up to examine evidence that bank accounts were being used as “money mules” to transfer the proceeds of crime.
An arrest warrant was drawn up and yesterday, members of the Garda Economic Crime Unit, CAB, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and Europol raided a property in Blackrock, County Dublin.
€3.25 million in crypto currencies and €20,000 in cash were seized, alongside documents and digital devices which Gardaí believe could also be valuable.
Two people, a man and a woman in their 30s, were arrested and detained for questioning.
A Senior Garda Investigating Officer has been assigned to investigate the case in coordination with Europol.
