90 motorists are stopped everyday for using their mobile phones while driving.
New figures revealed in the Irish Times today show the number of motorists caught using mobiles while driving is up 20%.
On the day of the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Liverpool and Barcelona in May, Gardai tweeted about a motorist stopped in north Dublin watching the match on their mobile phoned while driving.
Road Safety and Communications Officer for Mayo County Council, Noel Gibbons, says people need to stop using their phones while driving:
"Even with a hands free you can still be prosecuted for careless or dangerous driving or driving without due care or attention. Your licence can be endorsed or you can lose it for a period."
It's not just about holding the mobile phone, but it can be the habit of people checking their social media while it's in the hands free or trying to watch a video while they're driving."
