A deployment of 20 gardai will target social welfare fund as they are seconded to the Department of Social Protection Special Investigations Unit.

The pilot scheme will last for one year initially and will see gardai initiate investigations in cases where social welfare fraud is suspected. The Minister for Social Protection, the Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner approved the move.

The Gardai will work with the Department for 12 months.
