Sinn Féin’s Martin Browne suffered a dramatic elimination in the battle for the third seat in what has otherwise been a good week for the party.
Mr Browne’s votes transferred to left-wing Independent Seamus Healy, allowing him to beat Imelda Goldsboro of Fianna Fáil.
Mr Healy will now return to the Dáil after an absence of four years.
'Independent trickle'
Mattie McGrath said the ‘Independent wave’ predicted ahead of the election may prove to be more of a ‘trickle’.
He believes the Independents have a role to play in Government – which he hopes will be free from the Green Party.
“Now it's down for serious talks and [to] put our shoulder to the wheel and try and form a stable Government without the Greens,” Mr McGrath said.
“They have ravaged our country, especially rural Ireland.
“So, it's important we step up to the table.”
