The Green Party will launch its manifesto this morning promising to invest the Apple Tax money in public transport.

The party is also pledging to introduce a new ‘Climate Ticket’ to help regular commuters save money.

The party manifesto pledges to set aside €7 billion of the Apple Tax money for major transport projects like the Metrolink, DART+ and rail projects in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford.

It promises new rural local link bus services every week and more 24/7 bus services in cities and towns.

The manifesto also contains pledges for a State-led childcare system and free solar panels for 200,000 low-income homes.

The party’s new Climate Ticket plan would replace the Tax Saver ticket introduced for commuting workers before the pandemic.

The new ticket system would take account of the fact that more people are now working remotely for part of the week.

Elsewhere, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin will all make pitches to the farmer vote today.

Simon Harris, Micheál Martin and Mary Lou McDonald will each set out their stalls at the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) National Council throughout the day.

It comes after the IFA released a document containing its key "asks" for the next Government.

The demands include a retention of the nitrates derogation programme.

IFA President Francie Gorman says he wants clarity from the party leaders on the many challenges facing farmers right now:

The most pressing one is the nitrates derogation,” he said.

“But from CAP, environmental schemes to the derogation trade deals and the whole cost of doing business and regulation.

“They are there lines up for the next Government to address.”
