Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said that even without all the votes counted, there is a clear sign the people want change.

Sinn Féin are set to make significant gains from the last General Election in 2020 but it is yet to be seen if the party will acquire enough seats to form a Government in a ‘left coalition’.

“We have now confirmed that we have broken the political mould here in this state, two party politics is now gone,” Deputy McDonald.

“It's consigned to the dustbin of history, and that in itself is very significant.

“The question now arises for us, what do we do with that?

“We are clear that we want to change people's lives, make things better.”

Deputy McDonald said she believes another five years of a Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil coalition would be a “bad outcome for our society”.

“When the votes are counted and when we know the lie of the land, we will be talking to people about the possibilities of Government,” she said.

“I do not want to see another five years of the kind of chaos, the kind of disregard that we have seen under Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil - I think that is a bad outcome for our society.”

Currently the big three parties are close on seat counts.

Fianna Fáil are on 12 seats, Fine Gael are on 11 seats and Sinn Féin are on 9 seats.
