You can keep up to date with all the General Election results throughout the weekend through Newstalk’s live blog and video stream.
He lost out to Fine Gael's Edward Timmins, who took the fourth and final spot in the constituency.
Mr Timmins ran alongside his party's leader Taoiseach Simon Harris, who was elected on the first count.
Mr Donnelly was first elected to the Dáil as an Independent 13 years ago.
He helped to co-found the Social Democrats in 2015 alongside Róisín Shortall and Catherine Murphy before joining Fianna Fáil in 2017.

Meanwhile, Green Party Leader Roderic O'Gorman held onto his seat in Dublin West last night, becoming the only party member to do so.
Speaking to Newstalk after his election, he says the rebuilding process starts straight away.
“The work of rebuilding the Green Party starts,” he said.
“We've been knocked out before, we've come back – and we will come back.
“We'll take a take a couple of years, but we will come back, and we will grow our council seats and be back represented in the next Dáil.”
161 TDs have been elected to the 34th Dail so far, with counting set to resume this morning.
12 seats are yet to be filled.
Newstalk reporters will be at count centres around Ireland bringing you all the results as they come in.
We will also be running election specials throughout today and tomorrow, and you can follow all the action on our live blog and on our social channels.
