Thousands of protestors have again taken to the streets in protest across the US, defying curfews imposed in some areas.

It is the eighth night of unrest over the killing of George Floyd in police custody.

Speaking last night, the mother of his six-year-old daughter said she wanted all four officers involved in his arrest to face justice.

“He loved her, he loved her so much,” she said.

“I'm here for my baby. I'm here for George because I want justice for him and I want justice for him because he was good.

“No matter what anybody thinks, he was good.”

She said the officers involved in his death must be charged.

“At the end of the day, they get to go home and be with their families,” she said. “Gianna doesn't have a father.”

"He will never see her grow up, graduate. He will never walk her down the aisle.”

Mr Floyd died after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on the back of his neck for nearly nine minutes in the city of Minneapolis.

Video of the incident shows the unarmed Mr Floyd repeatedly telling the policeman “I can’t breathe” before losing consciousness.

Protests continued across the US last night, with curfews imposed in around 40 cities.

Crowds gathered outside Lafayette Park in Washington DC where 24 hours earlier police used tear gas to clear protesters away for a photo opportunity for US President Donald Trump.

Around 1,600 US Army troops have been deployed to the area; however, a Pentagon spokesman said they are “not participating in defence support to civil authority operations.”

President Trump threatened to turn the US military on protesters in a speech at he White House on Monday night.

Other marches took place in Seattle, Portland, Miami, Houston, Columbia and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, police in Paris fired tear gas at protesters in the French capital last night.

Several thousand people had rallied peacefully for two hours around the main Paris courthouse in homage to George Floyd and to Adama Traore, a French black man who died in police custody.

A second Black Lives Matter protest is due to go ahead in Dublin on Saturday, despite concern over COVID-19 breaches.
