The “disappointed” family of George Nkencho will appeal the decision not to prosecute Gardaí following his death.
In 2020, the 27-year-old was shot in the garden outside his family home in Clonee, Dublin by a member of An Garda Síochána following an alleged assault.
Afterwards, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) investigated and a file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Yesterday, to the dismay of his relatives, the DPP announced no prosecution would be brought in the case.
“The Nkencho family are disappointed with the decision of the Director of Public Prosecutions not to prosecute members of an Garda Siochana involved in the shooting dead of their son and brother George,” family solicitor Phelim O’Neill said.
“The family intends to appeal this decision and in the circumstances will not be making any further statements until this process has been concluded.”
GSOC said it would continue to engage with the family “in the context of coronial proceedings and any other statutory processes that may arise”.
It also promised to publish the “substantive detail” of its investigation into Mr Nkencho’s death in due course.
