Gerry Adams has attacked the timing of his arrest over the IRA murder of Jean McConville.

The Sinn Fein leader suggested the police's action had sent out the "wrong signal" but says they still have his support.

He was released from custody last night after 4 days of questioning about the 1972 murder. A file will now be sent to the North’s Public Prosecution Service.

Speaking at a news conference, Gerry Adams said claims that he'd be involved were part of a sinister campaign. The North's Secretary of State says it would have been very destabilising if Sinn Féin had withdrawn its support for police in the north and Theresa Villiers has welcomed Gerry Adams comments that he supports the PSNI.

Theresa Villiers says she's 'absolutely confident' the PSNI behaved appropriately:Meanwhile, the North's First Minister Peter Robinson, says Martin McGuinness must reconsider the remarks that he made about the PSNI.

On Friday, Mr McGuinness, who is Deputy First Minister, claimed an 'old rump of the RUC' still exists within the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

His comments were made while Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams was questioned about the abduction and murder of mother of ten, Jean McConville.

He was released from custody without charge last night and a file will be sent to the North’s Public Prosecution Service.

First Minister Peter Robinson says Mr McGuinness has a duty to give full support to the PSNI:
