Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch will be allowed to return to Dublin to contest the upcoming general election.

The Irish Mirror has reported that Hutch’s legal team told Spanish prosecutors he wanted to go home to run in the election.

Hutch was released from police custody in Lanzarote yesterday after being arrested on charges related to money laundering.

He was released on €100,000 bail.

If he does put his name forward for the general election, Labour Senator Marie Sherlock will be running against him in Dublin Central.

Speaking to Newstalk, she said Dublin Central is “going to be the place to be” during the campaign.

“We have a very eclectic line up, so I think there'll be a lot of spice in the contest,” she said.

Senator Sherlock urged whoever “wants to put themselves forward” to “bring it on”.
