Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch has been returned to prison custody after being arrested and questioned by Gardaí overnight.
The 58-year-old was arrested at Wheatfield Prison yesterday and taken to a Garda station in Dublin.
It is believed he was questioned on suspicion of directing the operations of a criminal gang.
On The Pat Kenny Show this morning, Irish Sun reporter Michael Doyle said it was part of a wider Garda investigation.
“We don’t believe certainly at this point that any charges will arise about this but it is part of a wider investigation by Gardaí into organised crime, which goes back I guess to the Regency gun attack and the long-running gangland feud which erupted off the back of that,” he said.
Hutch is due to stand trial next week for the murder of David Byrne at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in 2016.
Yesterday, two other men pleaded guilty to charges of facilitating the murder.
