The Tanaiste says he expects amendments to the abortion legislation will be discussed as the Bill passes through the Oireachtas.
Eamon Gilmore was responding to reports that a number of Fine Gael backbenchers are seeking amendments to the legislation which would limit the circumstances under which an abortion could be sought.
Yesterday Labour TD Ciara Conway said the only acceptable amendment would be one that would bring the law in line with best medical practice.
Deliberations on the 'small print'
The Fine Gael chairman also said yesterday that party members who oppose abortion legislation will be able to seek amendments.
Speaking to The Irish Times Charlie Flanagan said the draft Bill will not be 'rubber-stamped' with anti-abortion TDs and Senators given plenty of opportunity to deliberate on the 'small print' of the law.
Some Fine Gael deputies want to see an annual review of the legislation if the number of terminations rises and legal representation for the unborn child if a woman is granted an abortion on grounds of suicide.
The Labour Party is opposed to any changes of the Bill which will be discussed at Oireachtas Health Committee hearings starting next week.
